Adopting a child outside US

Hi,

We are thinking of adopting a baby from India. Myself and my wife both are permanent residents (GC approved on March 9, 2005).

What is the process to get the baby here. Does the same logic apply for adopted child also (getting I-551 stamping at PoE).

Can anyone let us know about rules.

Thanks,
Vidyakalyan

Wait until you become a citizen. There is no provision for the adopted children of permanent residents to enter the US.

Adopting a foreign child as a permanent resident is very difficult. Before adopted child becomes eligible for green card, one of the parents has to live atleast two years with the child after adoption. It's not impossible (with re-entry permit), but may not be suitable for every parent. The following site provides some information about adoption.
http://www.usvisa.com/adoptions.htm

In addition, in USCIS site, you will find some more information.

Obviously things gets lot easier when one of the parents becomes citizen.
