Administrative Processing - How long ? please help!

I went to the Chennai consulate to get my H1 stamped but due to unfortunate circumstances my application along with the passport is under administrative processing.The reason being my passport is damaged a little bit , althou the stamping and all the pages are clear(definetely readable)

Its been over a month now and have sent them emails but everytime I get a response of "Please wait..it will take some time"

Due to the passport also not being returned, I cannot travel abroad. My company is planning to send me a business trip and I am stuck here.

What do you all suggest ?

What can I do other than waiting helplessly for x months or even a year probably for them to complete the processing??
Should I send them an email to atleast return my passport.I can atleast apply for a new one and also go on the business trip ?

Has anyone had any similar experiences.

From all the forums that I have been following, this processing takes 4 weeks or so..but these days itseems, it is taking lesser time. So, it might be better to wait for 4 weeks and after that write to them querying for your status..that might work..else..very little that u can do...

Hmm..so are they making sure that the passport was not tampered with, or what? This is strange. If yes, I would send a written request with your good financial and moral standing ,etc along with Employer's letter that you are valuable employee, etc. Just proofs towards good moral standing.
And yes, let us know what happens.

Now after 2 months i got a call from the consulate to collect my passport. i hope they have stamped my visa. Thanks everyone for your help. :)

My H1 got stamped from company A in india
I still haven't gone to U.S
can i get the same H1 transfered to some other company and then go to U.S
