Address change - please help

I have replied to my RFE and also done my second finger printing on Sep 12 and now I have to move to Greenbay, Wisconsin. What do you all advise? Should I change my address from Orlando, FL to Greenbay, WI? or should I keep the old address until I get my GC. I have heard that changing the address sometimes triggers file transfer. If I have to maintain the old address I'll have to pay rent at both the places. Please advise.

My sincere advice is to keep your old apt also cuz you never know what action they might take for just a change in address…

This is a double edged sword.

I was in the same situation couple of weeks back. My attorney advised me that I should immediately change address with BCIS as post office does not forward government mails. Therefore, it is very important that BCIS has your correct address.

Now, I was left with three choices, one don't move at all (which was not possible). Second maintain both of the apartments (this was also not financially viable), and third change address with BCIS and pray to God that things don't fall apart.

So, I opted for the most logically appealing option, that is, I moved to new apartment on Sept 7th and sent the change of address request to BCIS via my lawyer immediately. I also maintained the first apartment for additional 15 days just to make sure that in case there was a mail that left BCIS office, before the address change is updated in their systems, should not return.

Now, I've surrendered the old apartment today and I'm just praying to God that nothing should go wrong. As there is no way for me to know that BCIS actually updated my address in their systems or not.

I guess you'll need to take a careful decision on handling this situation.

Thanks

Yes, having an overlap at a time when your case may get processed is a good idea.

I had a an overlap of 1 1/2 mnths when I moved last dec. At that time I thot that would be alst time I have to juggle two apartmetns, being away from my wife and all.

But, seems like this Dec is deja vu all over again. I have to move again.

But come to think of it, a lot of people , desis , locals, do this when they change jobs, move etc.

You should be ok.. And in fact one of my friends got his GC forwarded by the post office to his new address also.

Government mails will be forwarded to a new address , I recently moved and my 2nd EAD approval notice was sent to my old address and the mail was forwarded to my new address , however it took a week longer for me to receive the approval letter

no problem

it should notbe aproblem. It is good to change your address, because if you get an REF you will be covered. I moved during my 485 twice and got approved . It did not delay my process.

Hope this helps.

Its very reassuring to know that USPS forwards the government mails also. My attorney told me that they don't. But, now looking at this post I realize that in the year 2001 I had moved twice in 3 months and the check for my income tax return was forwarded to my latest address (this is also a government mail).

Lets see how it goes.

Thanks

gc_howlong,
You must have waited too long to get GC, many nights with or without proper sleep, every second discussion with friends and relatives was on NSC wait, after all these years of pain...., just wait for some more days to get GC approved. Dont change your address in haste and later feel sorry that your change of address caused delays. By keeping the old address still vaild, you might have to spend a little more money, but in any case do not take risk, act accordingly to what is convienient to you and your family......

Thanks a lot to all of you for your advise. I have decided to keep the old address for some more time even it costs me some money.

Guys, what can happen if someone is maitaining two address in during a move an dgets approved.

If the approval letter comes to the old addres, can the applicant got the INS office near the new address for his stamping ?

Any ideas ?

Do it

My advise is to change the address as soon as possible. As per the law you have to change the address within 10 days. I goy my green card approved just in 3 weeks after i changed my address. SO there should beno effect on address change.

I dont know on what basis peace_of_mind is advicing.

usps

usps does not forward ins mail because it clearly states that it should not be forwarded and returned to the sender. But theremay be exceptions.

When I last called the BCIS, the "specialist" told me that once we update our address, BCIS sends a confirmation letter to the new address in @ 10 days.

Have the folks who changed their adresss recently received any such letter / mail ?

Thank you.
