Hi there,
I have a strange issue. Basically I am a doctor but working as a programmer in this country. I have filed for I 485 but my husband is on J1 visa and will be going back to India for HRR for 2 years. I might get my Green card in one year time and after that can I CHANGE MY PROFESSION like joining residency or can I STOP WORKING and study at home for my residence entrance exam. When is the earliest that will I be able to do that? Or should I have to work as a programmer till my husband comes back from India through my Green card.......I am just scared of INS rules.

It might create a problem during citizenship

If you have applied and got your GC for the programmer job and if you change your profession after getting the GC, during citizenship process, INS may raise an issue specifying false representation of the case and deny the citizenship or permanent residency. This is according to one of Shiela Murthy\'s chats. I don\'t know how long you have to wait after getting GC to take up the new profession.

I don\'t know much about GC/I-485 complexities. As for preparing for the residency exam., there should be no problem. After getting the GC, you probably may accept unpaid residency without leaving your paid simultaneous programmer activities. Tough - may be consult an attorney.

I hear the sayings like this: if one has got GC through employer A and then he quit and join another employer B before 180 days, does this cause problem during citizenship process?

After Green card a person cannot change profession at all.......not even after 2 years??? Has anyone else come across this issue? Actually I spoke to my lawyer and she said it should not be a problem but I just cannot believe her as there is Sheela murthy and some people coming up with contradictory statements.
 
According to AC 21...

If you take up the same profession, it shouldn\'t be a problem. But AC-21 also says that if 485 is not approved within 180 days, then you can change jobs to a similar position. So assuming you change your job before 180 days and your 485 is not approved within 180 days, I don\'t see any problems during the citizenship process.
