Hi

Someone who sits with me in a committee is writing me a recommendation letter;

If he mentions that we sits in a committee with me in the letter, should I refer him as an Independent person?

Pls advise me

My opinion is that an independent reviewer has to be a person that became familiar with your work primarily through its outcome (e.g., publications, presentations at meetings, etc.).

There is a possibility, in my view, that a fellow committee member may be considered as a co-worker...

It's just my understanding though - I am not an immigration lawyer.

The best of luck to you!

Independent recommender is someone outside your sphere of influence. If someone sits with you on a committee he or she most likely benefits from your becoming permanent and hence this is a tough sell

(though at least in my case I know several co-committee members that would benefit from my being uprooted)
