A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step

I would like to come and settle permanently in US. I have several options to consider: to win the DV Lottery (a slim chance, but there is a chance), to wait for some 20 odd years before my uncle (who is US permanent resident) becomes a US citizen, and one of my parents obtains US permanent residence, or to go through a process of obtaining employment on H1B visa.

The process of immigration to US is complex and unclear. Additionally, there are rumours that US immigration laws can be reviewed at any stage; this may make it difficult for those who are currently in the process of obtaining GC.

To come and settle in US on a H1B visa is the most appealing option for me. I have a couple of questions to those who have gone via this thorny path:
-How and where do I start looking for employment in US? Are there known companies that specialise in recruiting skilled workers from abroad?
-Would it be worthwhile considering employment in a non for profit organisation?

My relatives and my friends live in US. Immigration to the USA is a long process. I have not tried any of the options available to me yet. Once all of the options available to me are exhausted then I will look at Canada's immigration program.
