A gap between residency (on H1b) and the new job

I am currently on H1b for my residency, which will end at the end of this month. After that, I am going to work as a family doctor in a big medical group. The group gave me a letter of understanding for apply for the new H1b. However, the letter says the job will start on Sep. 01, since I won't get my MD license until the end of July. There is a two-month gap between the two jobs. Do I need to leave the country in this period? My husband is working on his H1b too, can I change my status to H4 first? Anybody had the similar situation? Please let me know if you have any good suggestions.

Thank you.

You can change status to H-4 for 2 months, and then back to H-1B. In fact, you can submit both applications at once, and you must do so while in valid status.
