My wife and I sponsored her sister's family (her sister, husband and son). My income was the deciding piece that made the whole thing work.
We signed some pretty ominous looking language about providing 1.25 times the poverty rate for the rest of our lives. What is our liability? Have we agreed to provide, in essence, unemployment, health and old people care for her sister's family?
What steps can we take to mitigate our responibility?
There's language about 40 quarters. Does that apply to each individual that we sponsored? Does her sister have to work 40 quarters, also her husband and the son (which is 6 at the moment). Could we be liable for the son's welfare for 12 (until the son turns 18) +10 year (work)?
It seems that we've agreed to provide catastrophe protection. Most likely, it will never be used, but after a terrible tragedy, are we on the hook? A little nervous... should I be. Has anybody been sued before due to signing this agreement?
Thanks.
