Hello,
I recently got my H1B visa renewed for another 3 years. Currently the I-94 card in my passport has 10 digits. My wife has just got her H1B visa. So when she went to apply for her SSN, we found that her H1B document does not have a I-94 number on it. And when we looked at her passport she has a 10 digit I-94 number as well.
The officer at the Social Security Administration has said that the I-94 number should be of 11 digits and not 10 and that the system does not recognize the 10 digit number of I-94. I looked at my H1B and my I94 number is the same as the passport's with just the number 0 added to the front. I did not have any problems getting my H1B renewed.
Now my wife has just applied for a new SSN with the zero added to her I-94. However we are not sure if there would be any problems with her getting her SSN.
1. I read that the I-94 should be of 11 digits and not of 10 digits and that I have to contact the Deferred Inspection Sites to get a new I-94. Now when I called one of the offices, I was told that I just need to add a zero in front of my I-94 and that would do. Just to make sure that they are correct, I called another Deferred Inspection site and they said that I have to fill out a form and come in personally to get a new I-94.
So I called back the original Deferred Inspection site and the lady officer plainly told me it was a waste of her time and my time if I came there because she said that there was nothing else that she was going to do except add the zero.
I have also contacted the local INS and they said to contact the Deferred Inspection Site to get the issue resolved.
Now can anyone tell what I am suppose to do?
Thanks,
Vijay
