A Complex Situation

I got my Green Card with a conditional status last October, my wife is a US Citizen and we have a 1.5 year old child together. Upon receiving the card we went back to our native country of Bangladesh in the same month. My wife stayed for about 2 months and returned to the US to complete her education and took my daugther with her. I began an Internship here with a large organization which just finished a few days ago. The problems are that I have stayed outside the country for more than six months, and to further complicate things my passport was stolen just a few days ago. I have already filed a report with the local police. I am due to travel back to the US in a few days, I would be grateful if you guys could advise me on what I need to do in order to minimize the complications at the port of entry. I should mention that I own property in the US (a house in New York City) and have a letter from my employer explaining the Internship, I may also be able to obtain a copy of the immigration papers that show when I entered Bangladesh last year. Thanks a lot, this situation has really been putting me on edge the last few weeks.

You will be fine since you traveled abroad for less than a year. If you ever plan to travel for more than a year, get a reentry permit. Do not disclose unless really grilled that you worked in Bangladesh. Do disclose that you have a USC wife and a daughter and property in the U.S. and that you are coming back from a trip abroad.

I do hope you have your plastic GC.

Thank you, I do have my plastic green card. Should I mention that I was completing an unpaid internship or is that off-limits as well?

why would you even want to mention it? Unless asked, do not volunteer information. When asked, you have to tell them the truth - unpaid internship.

Lucy, thanks so much for your help, one last question though, is there anything other than my Green Card and related paperwork that I should have with me at the port of entry?
