A bit confused

Hi all.

Canadian citizen married to USC, I reside here in Canada and am wading through visa process to get a K-3 visa to enter the US and live with my husband.

First off, we filed I-129F and I-130 simultaneously which apparently wasn't the right thing to do, yet we seem to be progressing because our case is now at the NVC.

I'm the agent for myself because I wanted all the mail coming to me here, since he plans to visit me in the summer and we hope all the immigration steps to be completed during this time. So I've just got an email saying we need to pay an immigrant processing fee of $400. From what I've read on this site, that seems to be correct; I will have to print some things out in 3 days and send it to them, as well.

But THEN what happens? I have read that they will send me a packet of some kind, but I'm confused as to what forms/information will be in it; will we receive an appointment for the consulate in Montreal along with this packet, or do we have yet another set of forms to fill out and information to send?

I admit I have been really confused by this process (i'm not sure I've ever felt stupider in my life). I'm not totally impatient, but I would like to know if we're talking about 2 more months' wait before we get to the consulate, or 6 months.

Any help would be appreciated.

Heres a flow chart documenting all the different steps that take place during a K3 petition.

When did you file for your k3? The average time from the first receipt notice to getting the visa in hand is 10-12 months.
Once your petition is approved, you will receive a notice that this has happened (called NOA2). After this, the petition is forwarded to NVC who then send it to the interviewing consulate. Once they have it they will send you packet 3. In packet 3 is a list of instructions about what to do next along with a checklist. Once you send the checklist back to them, they will then send you packet 4 which will be a letter stating the date and time of your interview. The time between receiving packet 4 and your actual interview date could be anywhere from a few days to many months. Are you going through the Montreal consulate? Ive heard that its usually a few months between interview letter and interview date from this embassy.

We filed last August.
It looks like things are going more or less according to what you've said.

Thank you.

I've been really confused about one thing though...
What seems to happen to everyone else is that P3, with the DS-230 and requests for various documents, is sent to them from the embassy. I was sent it from the NVC, and was asked to send the documents TO the NVC.
Did we do something wrong?
