If you apply while you are in India, you have to wait till your H1 gets approved and you get stamped.
I would advice to file in premium processing get the approval before you visit India and comeback before your visa expires. At POE show your curren unexpired visa and new approval. They will give you I-94 till new I-94. You can apply 6 months before your visa expiration date.

You can leave for India while extension is filled and is in process but in that case you have to wait till your new H1 gets approved.
However, There are different complications involved so speak with an attorney before making any decision.
