90 day limitations

I am a UK citizen visiting the USA on a 90 day Visa Waiver Program. My 90 days is ending shortly and I have been told that I can go to Canada for a visit and that when I return to the USA from Canada I will be starting a new 90 day visitors visa. Is this correct? I would hate to be stranded in Canada because my 90 days passed and I did not return to the UK. Any thoughts....PG
 
WOW, that was fast. We spent four hours trying to get the answer on the Immigration sites. Thanks so much for your help. PG
