797 - asking go to Chennai for visa stamping

Hi,
This is the problem for my friend, who is in status for all time. He came to US on company A's visa in 2000 and changed company B,C and D. Now he want to join in Company E. But when he was checking his Company D's 797, the BSIC mentioned that he has to go to Chennai, India consulate for visa stamping. The 797 didn't have the I-94 attached. He never left the country after his first arrival and he want to go in next Feb. Is it create any problem to get another approval or going to India and come back with the old visa, which is still valid until April, 04. Please let me know, if you have any idea. I will appreciate you guys time.

Since S/he is working with E, in order to be in legal status S/he has to get an I94 NOW. S/he can try the local USCIS office (file I102) or the nearest POE or Canada/Mexico. But ask your friend to be prepared to go to home country to get the visa stamping.
