Was wondering how they count the 5 years after you get the Permanent resident. Is it from the date on I-485 approval notice or the date on the I 551 stamp ?

If project Ocean becomes a complete success, the clock would start from much earlier :) :)

Right now its the 485 approval date ( I think ) -- am sooooo far away from my approval - so I really don't pay much attention on the specific date :)

Normally I-485 approval date. But there are exceptions too.

What do you mean by "there are exceptions too" Pralay, can you provide more information.

Check your plastic card. It has a field "Residence Since XX/XX/XXXX". Normally this date is I-485 approval date. But there are some cases where it was some date after approval date - either some weird date or stamping date.

ok thanks pralay, i was wondering it was something else, yeah you are right that makes sense. i have not got my card yet, my wife got it but according to it, it says you are resident 2 days before they stamped.
