485 Vs CP

We had to go with the CP versus going with 485 for the last stage of our green card processing since we live outside the US. When the dates became current across the board I couldn't apply for CP since I didnt have all my documents. So, out of curiosity, I wanted to confirm that other than getting the EAD there is no other advantage of going with 485. There is no way people who applied for 485 whose numbers are not current, can get their green cards, correct? The people who applied for 485 have now been called for biometric finger printing but they still cannot the card until their PD becomes current, correct?

Thanks for the response. I guess one advantage in the current situation as opposed to CP is that in the past CP used to be faster than 485 however now since the dates are badly retrogressed for India, all the processing can be done and completed for 485 and kept ready so when the PD is current they can get the GC. In CP they won't even touch your file until the PD is current which means there will be additional time needed after that.

In addition to the EAD there are additional benefits of filing I-485: Advanced Parole (for traveling) and AC21 rule (for job changing). Now, all the above features are useful only when someone is already living in the U.S. So I-485 has an advantage over CP only if someone is physically residing in the U.S. at the time of filing the final stage of the green card.

Generally an I-185 case may be processed in time but wont be approved till a visa number is available.

True my concern with AC21 is I don't know how safe that is. I guess you could always have an officer reject it which is why I don't know if thats a huge advantage. Having come so far you don't want to use AC21 and get rejected but I agree its good to have that in your back pocket.

My big question is some people say that your case will be processed in 485 and all you have to wait for is for them to mail your GC when PD is current whereas others say that even in 485 USCIS will not process until dates are current? Which one is it?
