485 PENDING H1 6yr getting over

485 Pending.. don\'t worry

485 pending naturally gets you into \'Adjustee\' status and you don\'t need any other special status till your 485 get adjudicatd. But the only catch is if ( god forbid ) your 485 application is denied, you will be immediately out of status.

At the sametime, I am not sure your H1 renewal will be approved if you have your 485 pending ?

You can extend you H1

Under AC21 you can extend your H1 after 6 years on a year by year basis. And you can do that while your 485 is pending. As Srirenga said it is better to extend your H1.
 
I-485 preserver your status, but you need either H1B or EAD to work/get paid.

User your EAD to work, if your H1B expires before 90 days of filing for EAD, You can\'t work without H1B.

After 90 days you can go to local center for iEAD.
 
H1 extension to 7th year will not help if 485 is denied

I spoke to my lawyer about this.

Your H1 7th year extension is tied to the pending 485 application and if 485 is denied, the H1 is not going to help.

So use EAD to work and AP to travel.

If you still have time left in the 6 year term, then it makes sense to renew the H1.
