485 -180 days rule applies retroactively

180 days rule became a law on October 17th. The big question was if it applies only to those who filed for I485 after that date, or to those that applied before that date too (retroactive thing :-)

So now the INS is saying (although this is also unofficial) that this law applies also to people that filed for adjustment of status before October 17th, and not only to those who applied after it became a law.

This is the way I underestand it - hope it helps :-)

My interpretation of retroactive is "if u filed 485 in july 2000, 6/2000, then by 12/2000 u should be able to switch job". As www.shusterman.com says, if u want to be really positive about it wait till mid April ie., 180 days from the date the law was signed to switch jobs. even if u filed in 6/2000 u need to wait till april 15 2001 to change jobs. Ron at www.imminfo.com has said this repeatedly - check out the forums in his site (he is an attorney based in los angeles).
