Hello,
This is in regards to the Tax information that we need to provide INS for getting our citizenships.
I looked at the website http://www.irs.gov/faqs/faq-kw31.html for getting me a copy of my Tax information. I saw two things.
1. Request for Copy of Tax Return ( 4506 ) which is $39.00
2. Tax return and transcripts ( 4506-T) which is free for the last 3 years.

My question is two folds:
1. Which ones should I go for?
2. If it is 4506, Is it correct that I pay 39.00 for all the 5 years or is it ($39.00 X 5 )?
3. If it is enough for us to go for 4506-T, They say that I can get my tax transcripts for the last 3 years, what do I need to do for the other 2 years. I need the tax information for the last years, isn't it?

Need help.....

Thanks

Dont sweat it.!!

2. Tax return and transcripts ( 4506-T) which is free for the last 3 years. If you used a tax prepare like HR block. They would have copies for all year filed.

Automated phone requests allow you to get 5 years of tax transcripts (even though the IRS advertises that you can get only the last 3 years).

McMahon,
Can you give some detail on this? Which number do you call to get 5 years transcripts? How do you provide your address or fax # etc on the 'automated phone' system?

Someone was saying you can get 3 years and then request again for other prior years...can this also be done?

I wouldn't sweat it in a different way ;) If your tax situation is clear, i.e. regular employment, no long stays out of the country I wouldn't even waste my time obtaining the tax copies. In my case and many other cases they don't ask for them. On the other hand if you have a lot of self-employed income or long stays outside of the country then it makes sense to get the tax returns. Anyway, it's your time and you're free to spend it how you see fit ;)

From the IRS website:
Need a Copy of Your Tax Return Information?
Request transcripts by calling 1-800-829-1040, or order by mail using IRS Form 4506T (Request for Transcript of Tax Return). We do not charge a fee for transcripts. Allow two weeks for delivery.
When you call the number (it is not an operator, it is an interactive voice system), you request a transcript identified by its year, for example 2006. One you are done with requesting 2006, the voice system asks you whether you would like to request for another year - you then enter you would like 2005. Once you are done with 2005, you indicate you would like another year, for example 2004.
Once 2004 is complete, you still can indicate you would like another year, for example 2003 and when I requested it, it worked. I was able to get transcripts for 2002 and 2003.

McMahon,
Thanks. In the IVR phone system, how do you specify your address where you want the transcripts to be mailed to you?

Huracan,
Agreed. But there is a list of things, and then there is the JohnnyCash list of things to take - so depends on which list you follow :-)

Tax transcripts are not required unless (a) one is applying under the 3 year married to a US citizen rule (b) has an overseas stay above 6 months or (c) has had periods of unemployment and the USCIS officer would need to assure that you are not likely to be a public charge after getting US citizenship.

I personally never changed my job and had no overseas visit over a month and do not plan to carry tax transcripts to the interview.

It is easy to go overboard for an interview, which typically lasts 10 minutes or so.

The IRS sends the transcripts to the address they have on file (the address you indicated on your 1040).

I spoke to the IRS dude yesterday. He said that for getting the Tax Transcripts, I need to either use the IVR or mail/fax 4506-T. ( all free of charge )
When using the IVR, He mentioned to me that I can get for all the 5 years.
When using the good old mail, He informed that I have to mail him two 4506-T. One for the last 3 years and other one for remaining 2 years.

I did not ask the IRS dude about how to provide my address or the fax number though. But I guess that is an internal logistical issue that you,me or anybody, everybody should deal with. so no concerns.

I hope this helps..... :))
