2-Year conditional visa expired

My situation is a mess!

I was married in 2005 in which was genuine. We had a baby girl born in 2006. But things fell apart and we divorced in 07/08. Months before the 2-year condition expired.

I have since not filed the I-751 because of income as the divorce put a damper on it.

I left the country and went back home (Canadian citizen) to work and try to resolve this issue as soon as I could but ended up not finding work and I missed my daughter dearly. So I came back to the US but at the border I had to surrender my expired green card. At the time I was unaware of the steps and since my card was expired, I gave them my card and they let me through.

Money has always been the issue since the divorce and I now have help financially to take the steps I need to resolve my status in the US.

Is this situation possible to do on my own or should I get a lawyer? Probably a lawyer right?

Am I dead in the water? Do I have the opportunity to fix this or did I mess up bad?

Any help would be greatly appreciated! I do not want to leave my daughter!!!

Thank you.

Luc

ps. my father is also an American citizen now.
