2 questions on application

After reading the forum, I have only 2 questions about N-400.


>> Have you ever been a member of or associated with any organization, association, fund
foundation, party, club, society or similar group in the United States or in any other place?

I am a member of US Tennis Association. Should I answer “Yes” to this question?


>> Have you ever been arrested, cited or detained by any law enforcement officer
(including USCIS or former INS and military officers) for any reason?

I had a speeding ticket, fine under $500. What should I answer? I read other people’s experiences and some said “No”, some said “Yes”.

I don't know what you are SUPPOSED to answer, I can tell you what I answered and what the officer told me yesterday:

1) I am an attorney so I am a member of bar associations, I answered yes to that questions and IO said that was correct that I included all of those memberships;

2) I had 1 traffic ticket ($25), I put "yes" as an answer to that questions, IO said that I was correct in doing so (she did not ask me for any additional documents in that respect)

Personally, I would answer "No" to both those above questions.
 
I can understand the reasoning of saying Yes and No. As far as tickets go, the instructions say: "Note that unless a traffic incident
was alcohol or drug related, you do not need
to submit documentation for traffic fines ..." But it does not say you do not need to disclose them.
 
Answering YES for a minor traffic citation will likely trigger USCIS to send you a request for documentation. Although technically it doesn't say you don't have to disclose minor traffic tickets, some answer NO knowing that the majority of the time USCIS doesn't care about minor traffic citations.

As for US tennis association, I wouldn't worry about listing it since what they are looking for is that you don't belong to any extremist organizations.

For question 1, I would answer "yes" and simply list the organiztion. If they don't care about that group then there's no issue. I listed all my groups: boy scouts, professional organizations etc. My wife listed "Costco" and the IO told her that "hey, we dig deep, but not THAT deep". But it's no big deal to list it, AND it signals to the IO that you're being open and honest on your application. The reason why I listed all my organizations was to give exactly that impression.

As for the speeding ticket, that is the source of endless debate here. From the 18 months I have been reading about this, I would generalize and say yes, you should mention it, and bring documentation to prove you paid it. I would also pay the $5 and get my DMV transcript for the interview. In general, moving violations should be mentioned, but parking tickets and "camera" tickets, where the owner of the car (not the driver) is cited, probably do not have to be mentioned. Again, your ticket is no big deal and is certainly not a show stopper, but if you do mention it some IOs will ask for proof of payment. Best of luck to you.

I disagree completely with yummyk. At the end of the day it is the individual's call. He can choose to write "Yes" or "No" on the application.

Now let me ask you this, if you were ever involved in drugs & prostitution but never got caught. Later, realized that what you did was wrong and became a good person/citizen. To give you an example. Would you write "Yes" to the following:

Have you ever
Been a prostitute, or procured anyone for prostitution?

Like to know what would you write in your application since you are Mr. honest.
