My wife and I did the FP on 2/27/2003, and the status on USCIS web site changed to "FP received" on 3/7/2003.

Well, it doesn't hurt to try in any case. The worse case IRS will ask you to revise it. There is no punishment for it.

I don't think you can automatically switch back to H1 after you used AP or EAD. I had the same issue after using AP to enter US. I automatically entered Adjustment of Status (AOS) status. My lawyer had to do a H1 extension to get me back onto H1 status. Check this link out for this...
