I got married while visiting on a 90 day visa (actually it was after several 90 day visas). We submitted I-130 and have nothing back yet....do I have to leave the country because my 90 day tourist visa is ready to expire?

I am a UK citizen visiting the USA on a 90 day Visa Waiver Program. My 90 days is ending shortly and I have been told that I can go to Canada for a visit and that when I return to the USA from Canada I will be starting a new 90 day visitors visa. Is this correct? I would hate to be stranded...
