They give you a paper permit and they mail your license within 2-4 weeks. The paper permit is an acceptable and legal form of identification until then. That's how it works.

No, my case status is still on "initial review". The interview letter says to bring a state-issued driver's license or ID. I only have an out-of-state license. Does anyone know if that matters? Do I HAVE to have an ID issued in the state I have the interview in?

Hey, I'm not a 2011 guy, but if I were you, I would choose consular processing over adjustment of status. It's shorter and you have a much, much better chance to still get your green card.
