Good news, I got my permanent resident status without even interview! It took about 6 month for them to process. A friend of mine got it in 4 month without interview as well (and he was on time with his document submission). Seems like things are getting better in USCIS, which is a good sign.

I would say - wait for the green form they send for confirmation of the action - it will have the receipt number which can be used to verify status online. That form usually arrives in 1-2 weeks inside US.

I would make an InfoPass to your local USCIS office, get your wife and talk to the USCIS officer - they can tell you all you need in this situation (dont be afraid to describe your situation, unless you have a fake marriage :) ). No lawyer needed.
