We need to travel in Dec to India. We already have AP valid until Jan 2nd 2009. Can we apply for renewal before leaving or would it be better to apply after coming back?

Last year I got converted from L2 to H4...This is my first visit to India on H4 and I am travelling alone as my husband cannot come with me. I will using AP to re-enter in united states. Please let me know there would be any issues with this or any similar experience?
