Any new filing of 485 gets a file number. Which is also Alien or A #. It just means that you petition is on file and this A# will be used on all the forms for you EAD, AP etc.

One reason attornies suggest it might be, becasue USICS issues receipt notice and soon after FP notices. now is the Beneficiary is out of country, then probably FP appointment need to be rescheduled. That caused unnecessary delaly in 485 processing.

My humble opinion, 485 is petition for "Adjustment of status" mean from any other status i.e. F1, J1, L1 to Permant Resident. By filing 485 which is "Intent to immigrate" so if 485 gets denied your other status, in this case F1, will be void.
