They check international databases made available to the USA by foriegn countries, Interpol etc. They don't ask foriegn countries for people's background information. If they did, as letsien pointed out, nobody would ever pass the FBI namecheck if they were from an unfriendly nation.
I can't understand the attitude where its OK for us to bring random family members to America who will be a burden on the state, but H-1 visas to bring skilled workers to this country are "controversial". Talk about ass-backwards.
This is also my experience. My interviewer told me that photos are "too easily faked", and that they didn't accept email as proof. However my joint bank statement and car insurance did nicely.

Lawyers may use it, but USCIS doesn't. There is no such statute of limitations or any mention of 30, 60 or 90 days in any of the USCIS handbooks for Interviewing officers.
Yes, just like TheRealCanadian says I am not wrong. Filing for AOS invalidates your F-1, but gives you a "pending adjustment" status which means you're legally present in the USA.
