Hi It's always better to have H1 till your I 485 approval.But some time company don't 7th year extension, they will force you to go on EAD.

You no need to have visa stamped on your passport.H1 approval notice is fine.I did for my parents 2 weeks back with H1 approval notice.They got it for 10yrs. I don't know about EAD process.
