This does sound like something you absolutely must at least attempt. The J1 does seem to be a good option, but we do need to know a bit more about your case. Please keep us posted on the steps you take and how it works out for you!
I am pretty certain that the 6 months refers to the issuance of two 3 month visas. However, I may be wrong about this and would wait for someone who is certain about their answer. For your friend's sake, I hope I am mistaken.
Unless you absolutely must, I would not surrender the card. But, as Jackolantern said, if you are convinced this is the best course of action, you should wait until you have your re-entry permit. Best of luck!

There are actually some good indicators that the US economy is on its way back up. It's a pretty good time to make an investment because the chances for a good return are pretty strong. Still, the USCIS is understaffed and overworked, so I can see it taking them quite some time to process all...
Very interesting article. Thanks for the link! This visa certainly deserves all the attention it gets. The program is directly responsible for billions of dollars and thousands of new, full-time jobs being injected into the economy...and if that is not newsworthy, I don't know what is!
One thing you can definitely count on is them wanting a clear trail of where your investment funds came from. Their job is to ensure that all EB5 investment funds were legally gained, so you should be prepared for that. Please keep us posted!
