Sending your kids to school in the US

This is a question for all the parents out there. My boys have not had their Hepatitis A and B shots yet. The full course of Hep B shots takes six months to complete. Does anyone know if they will have to wait until the last dose of Hep B has been given to attend school?

They shouldn’t have to wait. Make sure you keep the copy of the kids’ vaccination worksheets that the panel doctor gives you to show the school when you enrol them. As long as they are on a schedule that is understood you should be fine. We had something similar, i don’t recall the details but I do recall that after x months we got a request from the school district nurse to provide the expected updated vaccination.

Absolutely! The school nurse worked with us to help meet full compliance, and was very helpful. She kept an eye on schedules and make sure that we submitted the required paperwork on time.

It can be a little hard finding some of the inoculations, as these would be given by paediatricians and my son was too old to visit that type of doctor. We found that going to suburbs with strong migrant communities helps in finding solutions to this, as you're in a group where other people have the same issues. Also these are good places to look for driving instructors and the like if you need them, as in my own suburb the local driving schools were set up with packages for high school students and not interested in individual, adult students.

On the above: many pediatricians here see children up to the end of high school, and ours even keeps her patients until they finish college. I know that was true of family we had in a different state across country too. Were you actually turned down by those you approached, or did you just assume an age limit?

We were turned down by the ones we approached. Interesting that different locations can have different experiences, but that is often the case with things, isn't it!
