Seeking Asylum on the Basis of Sexual Orientation as a Colombian

Hi,

I've been thinking a lot recently about applying for asylum in the USA. I'm gay and it's not easy at all being gay here. No one is out to kill me, it's just kind of a generalized and deep-seated homophobia. I have a partner, he's HIV+. (I'm HIV-). Probably we'd apply as a couple. Do we stand a chance?

From Wikipedia...

"Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) rights in Colombia have progressed since consensual homosexual activity was decriminalized in 1980 with amendments to the Criminal Code, making it one of Latin America's most advanced countries in regards with LGBT rights legislation. Between February 2007 and April 2008 three rulings of the Constitutional Court granted registered same-sex couples the same pension, social security and property rights as for registered heterosexual couples.[1] Law reforms in the 1990s equalized the age of consent in Colombia at 14 for both homosexual and heterosexual sex"

Yeah, I'm aware of that. Unfortunately the feeling in the streets and in the workplace is not as much in favor of gays as the legislation in the books, and if I lived in a rural area with my partner, the threat of physical violence could even be real.
