Hi there, I did some researched recently but I couldn't find an answer to my question. So my question is before I got the Green Card I already had SSN, now do I have to change my SSN card because it says on it " valid for work only with DHS authorization" Or are they gonna send me a new social security card with a new number?

And also if I got a Driver License with this old SSN, Will I have to change my driver license with new SSN?

Thank you ..

You need to update your immigration status with Social Security. Since you now have no restrictions, you should get a new card.

Your Social Security Number stays with you for life and can never change.

Thank you for the quick respond but do I have to declare that I got the green card , or are they gonna send me the new one without declaration cos I already have inform them on the green card forms that I had my Ssn

Visit the Social Security office with your green card and apply for a new SS card. It will have the same number (which stays with you for life) but with the employment restriction removed. You can use the unrestricted SS card combined with a state ID or driver's license for employment purposes without having to show the GC. That could be useful if you need to change jobs when your GC is lost or expired.

Sorry I think I beat around the bush instead of getting to the point but I haven't received the GC yet, is the work authorization card enough to apply for the new SSN...

If you've lost the original SS card, you can use the employment authorization card to get a replacement SS card, but that replacement card would still have the employment restriction wording. You need a GC or citizenship to get the unrestricted SS card.

So if you still have the original SS card in your possession, there's no benefit to applying for a new one before you get the GC.

Last Question Can I work with SSN number and the work authorization card without any need of Green card? Seems like it is going to take a while getting it.
