Sent home from interview :(

I just recently had my interview... However, I was sent home for one missing document and asked to send it to complete the interview. This was a tax return. Here is the situation:

Up until recently, I have had little to no knowledge of the tax return process and laws. This return I am missing is more than likely nonexistent. The reason why is obviously because I may not have filed. That particular year, I was a full time student in college for about half the year and worked only a few months prior and more than likely earned less than the minimum to file. I remember going to the income tax return office with my W2's with my parents, handed them over and the tax person did whatever it is they do on their computers.

SO... it turns out the interviewing officer WANTS to see that particular tax return and apparently my college transcript is not enough documentation for that year. I repeatedly 'assured' that I indeed filed. I mean... i remember going to that tax office and all. So now they want to see it.

After the interview, I went to my parent's house and we turned the house inside out looking for it. It was no where to be found. Online, IRS has no transcript for that year. I am now in the process of collecting my W2s from my employers. My mother remembers I didn't file because I earned very little and that she claimed me as well. We found her return where I am listed as dependent.

As for my questions:

*Is my 'assuring' the officer due to my ineptness and misinformed self that I DID file considered a LIE on my interview?

*What's the worst that could happen if I am unable to provide the tax return because I didn't file?

- Most importantly... would any of this be grounds for deportation?

I don't know... I wanted to do things perfectly so I hired an attorney to help me and they told me to gather tax returns. This is how my case was started I guess. Are you saying I don't need tax returns?

Most of people on 5 year route were never asked about these tax return unless they checked Yes to those tax related question on N-400.

you created the confusion by saying you filed taxes, and then not having them. If you were claimed on your mom's taxes then submit those as evidence and highlight where you are marked as a dependent. You should be fine

I wonder what led the interviewer to ask about your tax returns. Did you voluntarily give the interviewer a set of tax returns without them asking for it, and then they noticed one was missing?

When you are claimed as a dependent on somebody else's tax return, that reduces the threshold for being required to file from around $9000 to around $4000. So it's possible you had to file for that year.

Go to an IRS office and ask for the tax transcript for that year.
