Just became aware of this possibility. Apparently if you file an I-130 and I-485 concurrently (as well as other forms), your existing visas *may* or *may not* become invalid. So the I-131, if you get one, allows hassle-free travel and reentry.

What is the timeline for receipt of and acceptance rate of an I-131?
