1) I need to apply for FAFSA scholarship ASAP (class starts Aug 22nd), but don't have the card in hand, but USCIS site says it's ordered. Can I go ahead and apply for it using the A# on my EAD?

2) I want to remove the "INS authorization" thing on my SS card, is there specific time period I need to do that by? I would do it ASAP but I JUST got hired for a job and presented my employer with my EAD, which was sent somewhere to be processed so I don't know if anything will be interfered if I changed my SS status immediately.

3) I can remove the "temporary" mark on my DL, right? Not only that I want to remove the "temporary", they also only gave me like 1yr expiration period so I want to extend that.

4) (this question is not urgent but just thought I would ask) - If I were to go out of country, do I still present my home-country passport? If so, what could I expect at the airport? Anything particular I need to know about before exiting US (and of course reentering)?

EDIT: one more thing quickly just to confirm... EAD is no longer needed/relevant to me when I get the GC, right?

1. Yes
2. No specific time period
3. Yes
4. Yes you present your passport
5. No EAD void once you get your green card.

Next Question?

I came across another question while working on my FAFSA application.
It says that "Most male students must register with Selective Service to receive federal student aid. If you are not registered, select Register me"
I have heard of this but really don't know much about it. Am I automatically registered for this? How would I find out?

Sorry I went to grad/business school on full academic scholarship :) so I don't know anything about students loans etc. You may want to ask the people at the financial aid office.

You must register with selective service if you are a male living in US or its territories between 18 and 26 years of age in any status with the exception of lawful nonimmigrant. Go online sss (dot) gov to find out whether you are registered or not. You will be ineligible for federal student aid until you are registered.

i'm not looking for a loan. i get academic scholarship funded by FL state as well but since THIS school yr, they now require students to fill out fafsa if they want to receive the FL academic scholarship (aka brightfuture). they require them to fill it out whether or not they want a loan, grant, or just anything.

i checked and it seems that i was registered somewhere during my GC process... do they automatically register those who go through the process (my was through my USC spouse). this is puzzling to me because my SS# was put nowhere on my immigration applications

Yes they do. Whenever you signed I-485, you agreed to be registered with selective service. There is a whole paragraph explaining it on I-485. So you are good. Also I would recommend requesting an sss registration status card. You can do it over the phone through automated system. Make sure they have your correct address online.

For the past 10 or more years it is standard procedure to automatically register you with Selective Service as part of the green card process, if you are a male within the designated age range.

You don't need to do that right now. You can keep using the same DL until it expires. But it's up to you if you want to change it sooner in order to remove the "temporary" notation.

Note that if your next birthday is before the expiration date of your current DL, applying for the renewal after your birthday will give you an extra year on your new multi-year DL due to how they calculate the expiration date based on your birthday.

thanks everybody. now i will be applying for the FAFSA and hope that it will be processed in time before class starts!
