OCI before travelling

Hi,

I am planning to get a visa to travel and apply for the OCI at the same time(dont expect the OCI to get approved before i travel).

If the OCI gets approved and the oci status gets updated on the consulate website, is there a period within which i absolutely have to send in my password for stamping.
Can i wait say 2-3 months after the oci card reaches ny consulate before i send in my passport for the stamping (in case i am out fo the country when the approval comes in).

Or is there some wierd rule wherein if i dont send in my passport in a month the oci application gets scrapped and i have to reapply.

No. It can wait. There were about 5000+ OCI booklets ready for collection as of today in NYC; I am sure many sitting there for months.
