Question about PIO application and surrender certificate

I mailed my surrender certificate application on May 15 and received it yesterday after they happily accepted my $175. However I saw that my passport was left untouched. Just wondering if this is normal. I expected to see a cancelled stamp or something like that on the passport.

Also I am applying for PIO since I am travelling to India in about a month. The instructions on CGNY site or not clear at all. They don't even mention surrender certificate in the required docs list. But I saw a while ago that it needs to be sent. Does any know if a copy is OK? Does it need to be notarized?
There seems to be a lot of discussion about OCI on the forum, but the info about PIO seems to be scant.

Thanks in advance,
Vijay

I think whatever applies to OCI also applies to PIO and other Indian visas (for Persons of Indian Origin). Why are you not applying for OCI?
One month seems cutting it too close - send the application ASAP OR get an Indian visa.
A copy of your surrender certificate will do - you can also send your Indian passport for getting the missing "canceled" stamp along with your PIO/visa application.
A cheaper Indian visa now + OCI later works out cheaper than PIO ($73 + $275 < $385)

Thanks for reply. I am in NY jurisdiction and based on my past experience for my son, it takes about 1-2 wks to get PIO back by mail. So hopefully I am safe. My flight in July 8th and if I don't get PIO by June 25th, I can personally go to NYC and get the visa same day. I am little apprehensive about sending my passport for cancellation. If may needed as a supporting doc for VISA.

I think if you apply in person, you should get it in 1-2 weeks (NY consulate claims it takes them 4 working days!)
