Does anyone know this? Please answer if you know for sure.
I'm on 2 year green card right now. I've worked for a company 1 year and then got laid off. Should I file for unemployment? I ask because I wonder if it will matter when I file to remove condition from my green card that I've been on unemployment..

thanks in advance

Unemployment is an insurance paid by your employer to the government, which the government pays you if you're eligible. So it's not a social welfare. It doesn't affect your immigration status whatsoever.

Be aware that there are a number of requirements that must be met before a claim is paid; among those are a specified work time prior to layoff so many people will not qualify if they have not worked for a company very long before the layoff. Check the rules in your state.

Be sure to use the services of the state unemployment agency; they can be very helpful in referrals to a new position.
