priority/visa date for family based GC

Hello,

I got my GC in June 2004. I looked at the visa dates for family based category 2A for my spouse and it is 01 July 04. Does that mean I can file for my wife's GC now? I have not filed for her GC based on my GC so far.

If thats not the case what does the priority date or visa date mean in case of family based GC?

I would appreciate any help.

You can file I-130 for her at any time. The cutoff dates determine when the I-485 can be filed (or when a consular interview may be scheduled, if consular processing was chosen).

The priority date is assigned when you filed the I-130. The "01 July 04" you saw means that people in that family category whose I-130 was filed before that date can now file the I-485 or get a consular interview.
