You don't have to, it's not a must. It's your call, if you wish you can go ahead & register your e-mail address on uscis website. You may or may not get updates. The website is not too reliable.

They never updated anything at all until after I took the Oath and it was gone but withing 16 month nothing had happened and never got an email either.
They are no Pro's and Con's ... well let me take that back. Some actually get sort of "updates"

You don’t have to register with USCIS website to check status of your case.
If you have an application receipt number, you can check the status of your case online, by simply entering receipt number in search box.
"From USCIS: To view the status of a case, please enter the corresponding application receipt number. The 13-character application receipt number can be found on application notices you have received from the USCIS. It begins with three letters such as (EAC, WAC, LIN, or SRC)."
