Hi gurus,

I have a question regarding changing my name

I have a GC but i never changed my name, so it carries my maiden name. i want to formally take up my husbands name, but am wondering whether it is safer to do so at the time of filing for citizenship or should i get it done before hand?

we will be completing 5 yrs of GC september 2009, but i wanted to be ready beforehand.

incase i want to change my name now does anyone have any idea what process i need to go through for changing the same on my GC?

thanks in advance for any help/suggestions.

I wouldn't worry about changing my name at this stage. Unless it's something necessary & has to be done right away, I would wait and get it done at the time of citizenship interview.

If you travel frequently I will change it otherwise I will wait. Oh btw be aware that some states require that if you change your name in your driver's license and you need to show your GC and there is a different name, then some problems may arise.

You will have to fill out a form I-90 and pay the respective fees.

Will take around a couple of months to receive the new one.

For more info go to uscis.gov and check I-90.

Note: If you are filing because your biographic data (Name, Date of Birth, etc. ) has been legally changed, then you must bring one of the following to your in-person appearance appointment at the Application Support Center :
• the original or certified copy of a court order making the legal change; or
• the marriage certificate reflecting the new name;
To replace a card because of a change in any other biographic data, you must bring copies of documentation to prove that the new data is correct.
