Entering Canada after POE

Can someone tell me if you can enter Canada same day or even few days later after doing POE into US since you have a passport which normally requires Visa to enter Canada.

My friend cant enter Canada normallly since the passport she holds requires Visa to visit Canada and she doesnt have time to apply for one, but has been given US DV Visa and now plans to enter US via Los Angeles. Can she fly same day or few days later into Vancouver based on the stamp on the Visa label or will she need to wait for the physical GC and then enter Canada?

Thanks

To my understanding, a US green card DOES NOT permit you entry into Canada- only a US passport will. You friend will still need to apply for a Canadian visa in the US, after arriving. [Unless I misunderstood your question]

Since she's a US GC holder, she can easily get a visa at any of the Canadian embassies in the boarder states.

That is incorrect. U.S. Permanent residents do NOT need a visa to enter Canada. In response to the original question that you posed regarding whether entry is permitted during the initial period when the card hasn't been received, I suggest you contact a Canadian Consulate in the U.S. to find out the answer to that. You can also contact firms such as the following for an answer: http://www.abriggs.com/visas/c/canada_visa.php

Unless your friend urgently needs to go to Canada, I would recommend that he wait for the actual card before travelling.

Thanks DV2007, since my friend needs return to her country after POE in couple of weeks time and needs to visit family in Canada also, i am not sure if waiting for GC will be possible.

Anyways it might well be that she needs to apply Visa at a Canadian Consultae IF they require actual GC instead of the temporary stamp in passport.

Fantastic

Hi, I was obviously wrong. But where can I get access to the information that US GC holders can enter Canada without a visa.
Also, is the converse true- can Canadian permanent residents enter the US without a visa?

You can get info on this from:

Lazy me...I should have googled before posting my Question :)

So it seems you can enter Canada with just the temporary stamp on your temporary I-551 Visa which u get upon POE into USA.

My parents did same thing about 7 years ago and travelled into canada and then back into US based on that temporary endorsement without physical GC. But i just wanted to make sure since many things/requirements have changed post 9/11.

Coming back into US should be fine based on Temporary I-551 endorsement in passport. My friend also has a previous US B2 Visa in the same passport which was given for multiple entries for 10yrs and i think that is still also valid since Consulate did not revoke it in passport(unless they did it electronically) upon DV Visa issuance and so worse case she can use that upon entry to USA. But i dont think that will be required since Temporary I-551 should be fine to re-entry into USA

Thanks for the info/help guys

If her B2 visa has not been cancelled yet, it will be at POE. U can't hold 2 immigration status at same time.

Thanks johnkent,

i will let her know in case that happens.

Either way she does not need to get a visa from any Canadian Embassies to visit Canada after POE in USA.

thanks for the help though
