Friends,

I obtained my greencard 4 1/2 years ago, I would like to know when am i actually eligible to apply for citizenship,
( I heard from a friend, that i can apply after 4 years and nine months itself, is this true)

I see a lot about n-400 application and required documents. Is this the form that is required for the application?.

do i need to go through a lawyer for this.

What is the general processing time frame, in texas center, I see some posts with 8 months time frame from start to finish. has this been the trend for some time(years) or it varies like the nigthmare green card process.

Thanks in advance for your valuable information.

Pandi.

The official time is 90 days before completing 5 years. Some people (including me) recommend 85 days to have the extra peace of mind about how USCIS counts the 90 days.

Yes, N-400, minimal documents are photocopy of both sides of your green card and two passport pictures. Other documents can be needed depending on your particular case. Please look for the guide to naturalization in the uscis website and the form N-400 and its instructions

No need for a lawyer, it's pretty simple in most cases, but start looking into it so you're ready in about three more months. Take your time to read the entire guide to naturalization, the instructions and the form.

I don't know about Texas, it actually depends a lot on the particular local office you have. There is a way to find your local office according to your zip code in the uscis office. Then you could try to find posts here about that local office. In some places it is taking as little as three months and in other places around 8-9 months or more. It really depends on the local office.

Pandi,
It depends on FBI name check. That is where the delay can go into many months and years for some folks. That is what we all need to be praying to go smooth.

I recently got immigrant status through the DV program. I already lived in the US as a student on F1 for 4 years. Now I am a Permanent Resident. I would like to know when I can apply for US Citizenship? I know the rule is that you have to reside in the US for 5 years but in my case do the previous 4 years living in the US as a student count as part of these 5 years? I have heard they do. In that case, I can apply next year for US Citizenship - right?

See your thread you started above. You would be eligible in 2012...

No, your time as a student doesn't count towards meeting the residence and presence requirements for naturalization. Perhaps what you heard is what they do in Canada, where that time counts partially.
