Last name typo on NOA...

I received the Notice of Action (NOA) today for my N400 Application for Naturalization.

I noticed that there is a typo on my last name. The first letter should be an "O" instead of "D." I immediately called and notified them about it, and they said that this will be fixed and gave me a confirmation number.

But what I'm worried about now is if this will delay the processing of my case? I really worry whether this will affect when I get my fingerprints appointment, and that it will create just more issues and delays. Can anyone tell me if they had a similar issue like this and what happened?

The priority date is June 06, 2007. I received the NOA today, June 27, 2007. When should I expect my fingerprints appointment to arrive?

Thanks alot,
Doug

On the good side, your file should not get lost - because it is identified by its Notice of Action number (for example LIN* for the Nebraska Service Center) rather than by your last name.

It may slow down the process, or it may not.

How long after the NOA do people usually get fingerprints appointment?

It's also amazing how they can misspell my last name since they have copies of my green card to compare it to what's on the application. Unbelieveable.

I had similar situation like you but they typoed my SSN nbr.I noticed that while i was giving my FP . I told the FP officer immediatley she corrected there it self. Just to make sure i took an infopass appointment and verified with IO about my detials in the sytem the very next day.

My suggestion take an infopass appointment and confirm your detials are correct in the system or not with IO.

Sleek, this happened when you were getting fingerprinted. What I am worried about myself is that in my case this will cause a delay in them sending me the fingerprints appointment.

How long did you wait after your NOA to get invited for fingerprints?

I mailed my application to the NSC on 03/17. I received the NOA and FP appointment on the same day. They were both dated 03/20, which is my Priority Date. Please note however that this is not always the case. ou will see on other threads postings from worried applicats who have already received their NOA and are waiting for the FP notice even 4 weeks after the Priority Date. So do not get anxious even if 4 weeks elapse from the PD, it happens to folks who had no misspelling issue.

The only typo I found is that in spite of the fact that I listed my full name (5 given names + 1 family name), they listed just the first given name, the initial of the second name and the last name. I called the 800 number to notify them (I would not like the certificate of citizenship to list just a subset of my given names) and they told me I was OK since the NoA lists the exact names as they appear on the Green Card.

What exactly is this priority date? I mean my NOA says Priority Date June 6th, but I got the NOA on June 27th which is quite some time after the priority date. Does that mean anything? Is it unusual or something?

The Priority Date is the date printed in the upper right corner of the Notice of Action. It is the date the clock started ticking for the Naturalization process. It is not unusual that you got it weeks after the Priority Date. I received mine 7 days after the Priority Date.

It does not matter when you receive the NOA (as long as you receive it :) ) You just know that starting on the Priority Date the USCIS has been working on your case.

I understand now. So I should pay attention how many weeks after the priority date until I get invited for fingerprints, not how many weeks after I received the NOA?

Because since my priority date is June 6th, 3 weeks have passed already, so I should get fingerprint appointment soon, right?

The wait for your fingerprint notice was just a practice wait. Now you get to sit back and wait for your interview letter. Enjoy the wait - it makes the naturalization certificate feel that much better.

Good luck

LOL yeah, but first I'll have to get my fingerprints taken before I can enjoy the wait. :D

Do I have to go to the location it says on the notice, or can I pick another location? The reason I'm asking is because some people here are saying that going to Albany, NY is better than Syracuse, because it "speeds up the process"... but that may be just nonsense.

Don't confuse them. The worst thing you can do is do something that causes your application to require an extra step - as soon as you do that, you get off the "fast track". You want to be on the "fast track".

When absolutely nothing goes wrong, the USCIS can be rather efficient. Unfortunately, their definition of "goes wrong" is rather liberal; if a file is expected in an office this week and it doesn't show up until next Tuesday, that can cause an interview to be descheduled and delayed for many months.

By the way, I think you already are waiting for the interview. As far as I can tell, the key "time span" metrics to look at in this process are:

  • PD -> FP
    there's rarely a significant delay here
  • PD -> Interview
    there are many things that can go wrong here, name check, other checks, mis-routed files, descheduling
  • Interview -> Oath Letter
    This can be as quick as "immediate" (both my wife and I got our oath letters from the interviewing IO), or as long as several months. Typically it is about 4-6 weeks (which is a the standard USCIS "wait time")
  • Oath Letter -> Oath
    At least in Dallas, this tends to be 2-5 weeks, typically 2-3 weeks.

Good luck.
