How many people make money here and go back to live like a "King"? Anyway, the article says that there are financing options available for people who don't have that kinda of $.

can you really?
Are you suggesting investing in India the 500k and earn interest\yield at 10% and live off this yield?
yes it used to be like that....

but now if u want a good house....this money may just go for that...

but it is still possible to find a good house in a good city for around $100k.......and i think u can easily live off the $400k interest/dividends/returns..

401k/IRA count?

does these investment have to be particular type? If I have 500K in 401K/Stocks/Bonds/IRA, does it work?

I am just asking question. Above does not mean I have it :(

please correct me if i am wrong..

from what i know....in the first place investor does not get citizenship he gets GC/PR

2. its not enough that you bring 500k to usa, you have to actually start a business (or show a project plan) and hire locals......and as far as i know its not easy to run a business profitably unless you are an expert..

so u may get a Business project plan, and you may start a business....but before you get citizenship u may have lost that 500k and maybe u wont get your citizenship....

An US Citizenship didn't worth for 500K. Period.
i wish people spend some time to understand an issue before commenting..

if one is smart enough with $500k cash....then its no big deal to start a business in usa......and make some neat profit while going all the way to citizenship....

so thats the catch....u have to have money...and be smart enough to manage the business.

but i am sure there are enough loopholes....that you can come in here with that $500k......start a business....which maybe be run by someone and you are just a shadow owner.....for the sake of getting your GC....

no 401k....it has to be cash....ready to be invested in business.....but from what i know.....one can start with around $100k come to usa on investor visa (not GC).....raise money from banks.....start the business and then apply for GC.....

btw i am no expert.....all these i must have read somewhere on this forum...

one thing i know for sure......around 10 years back ....i have seen people from india used to come to usa by spending around Rs. 10 lakhs in consultant fees, showing that they have a genuine business interest......they used to get a business visa for travel and stay.....(max 6 months at a time i think)......the consultants used to show this people as CEO or some senior post in a medium sized company in existance for 3-4 years.......

but later on it became much easier to come to usa on H1B visa........you just need to have fake degree cert and fake resume :D

in small cities you can own house for much less and live off the interest and also do business (with good contacts in the US this should be easy) along the side and have an easy going life with US $500k-750k.
This is also an option after getting GC. just get the GC and live until it expires and then leave the US for good.
The key would be to have the investments in non-RAs.

Moving to the US involves lots of personal sacrifices in exchange for the economic opportunities available. Most people who are already making lots of money in their home country and were able to accumulate $500K in liquid assets aren't going to be very interested in putting that money at risk to obtain a green card. They would be enduring not just the personal sacrifice of being separated from their extended family and friends and culture, but also jeopardizing their existing non-US sources of income. That's why the investor visa is so underutilized.

It makes sense if you r 60 and want to get some social security money. There was an advertisement on this board by somebody who runs a housing scheme to do this i.e. buy a house and lent it out as a vacation home and claim investment and employment.
Unless it is for social security you should not want to part with 35% of your money.

If you have $500K and are 60 you can take that money and buy a life annuity that will pay you much more than SS will.
