Timeframe when to start initiating waiver process

This is a great forum. And I would like to thank in advance the moderators as well as the people who have helped others like me.

I have googled so many times on the topic "timeframe for J1 waiver" but I could still not get a clear idea, when would be the best time to start initiating the J1 waiver process. I am about to enter my 3rd year(last year) of residency in internal medicine and have already started applying for fcvs. Soon, I will start looking for potential waiver places.

OK, so here is my question...

If I will be entering my last year of residency in July 2007, when would be the best time and the latest time to initiate the waiver process? Applying for DOS case number, Getting an immigration lawyer involved, etcc...

The reason for this is I have heard posts also that you should start working 90 days after waiver is approved ( I will finish residency in June 2008).

Timeframe for the waiver process is still kind of vague. If anyone can please share their thoughts, experience, that would be great!

thanks.

September is not too early to start to find a place. It also depends on your specialty and possibilities. In any case, September-October is not too early. Keep in mind that many things may not go as fast as you would like, the lawyer may be slow or make mistakes and if the employer is not familiar with the waiver process, it may slow down everything too. In my case, it took a while to get the paperwork from my employer and my lawyer made a few mistakes that almost jeopardized my waiver. Though I started in October and spent my time kicking everybody's butt, I couldn't start working on the first of July as expected.

thank you for your response... how much did you pay for your lawyer if you don't mind me asking?

My employer paid for the waiver, so I don't how much it was. I paid about $1000 for the H1 visa, the employer paying for the balance / premium processing.

start early, (like now!) so you can interview in 5-6 places nd choose the best. Donr worry about the 90 day rule. As long as you join after completing residency, you will be fine.

Hi Tronkyman
I will also complete my residency in June 2008 and started thinking about this process. Could you please let me know what steps you have taken so far? I am trying to digest the tons of stuff posted in this forum. It would be great to hear from someone who is already doing this.
