Wrong SSN in N-400

Hi All,

My wife and I are scheduled for the interview next week. We were going through the copies of the N-400 forms filed and I noticed that I entered my SSN (our SSNs differ in the last digit only) in my wife's application. My wife is a homemaker and she never had an employment in USA. We are both above 60 years of age.
From the forum discussions, I understand that we can make corrections on the N-400 form during the interview. Did anyone have the experience of such an error and how it is taken up by the IO? It is too late to worry about it, but any advice or an account of similar experience will be appreciated.

I had the interview less than 2 weeks ago. The interview certainly is the right opportunity to have this taken care of. In my case, there was one of my middle names missing; they corrected it with red ink and that was it. To be certain, I'll double-cjheck the Naturalization Certificate :)

In your case, you just would need to remember to bring this up at the interview. The main piece of information the USCIS uses to identify you is not the SSN, it is the Alien Number (A Number). So the typo should not affect your identity frm the USCIS point of view. Your petition may get a little delayed as the USCIS is likely to check against both the SSN you supplied and the SSN linked to your A Number.

I would definitely take the social security card to the interview. The IO is probably going to ask for this evidence before making any changes to the application. I don't see any major issue with this. Be proactive during the interview, i.e. tell the IO about this issue, don't wait for the IO to tell you.

Thanks a lot for the encouraging replies. My wife has to take care of the problem in the interview and she is not very fluent in English. I understand that the IO does not allow me to be present at the interview. Anyway we keep repeating this point often to ourselves, so that she does not miss it at the time of interview. She will certainly carry the SSN card with her to the interview.

Hi All,

My wife and I had successful interviews. The SSN on my wife's application was corrected immediately. The IOs were professional, courteous and helpful. Each of us have taken about 10 mins for the interview and then waited for about 45 mins to receive the letter announcing the date of oath (on 24 Oct 07).
We want to thank you all for sharing your experiences with us.

It would be a good idea on the day of the Oath to visit the Social Security Administration - they need to see the original Naturalization Certificates - so they update your status.
