Working In Home Country For Up to 5 Years

Hi, I have recently received a notification letter saying I have been selected to proceed with the diversity visa application. My personal situation has somewhat changed since I started playing the DV lottery several years ago and I am surprised to win this time.

I have a good job in my home country (not with a US firm) and for financial reasons, I don't intend to give up my job for now. I intend to move to the US in 5 years' time (to "retire" and/or do further studies and not to work) and the green card will be useful then.

If I get the green card now, I read I have to show that I have not abandoned my permanent resident status by not leaving the US for less than 6 months.

So for the next 5 years or so, can I travel to the US every 6 months (or less) and stay for say 3 days and then return to my home country ? Can this be stretched to say 11 months (less than 1 year) instead of less than 6 months?

I dont intend to apply for the re-entry permit as I cannot afford the time to undergo the application process. At most, I can stay in the US for 1 week at a time.

If this helps - I think I am the good immigrant the US would want. I don't intend to leech on the social benefits system as I have my own net worth. I have no criminal record. I will pay US taxes in addition to taxes to my home country.

Thanks.

Even if you initially get a GC, your travel proposal will result in it being determined to be abandoned. Don't waste your money or deny someone who really will live and work and contribute to the US the opportunity to do so.

By the way, working abroad can be used as evidence that you have abandoned your GC.

Why bother to move to the US? What benefit is the US offering you? If you want to retire, there are other countries you can move to where your money will last longer. Decline the green card and let somebody who really wants it get it.
