Hi Guys,

Some job positions in the U.S. Goverment allow Permanent Resident to apply. Are they also applicable to our asylees?

Social Security Administration has document said "... ...The Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) now considers aliens granted asylum to have permanent employment authorization and requests that we treat them as permanent resident aliens... ...".

Any Experience?

Dear Robin,

Thank you for raising this very interesting and important question.

I think people can make a plausible case that asylees and refugees are LPRs for employment purposes. In addition to the SSA document you cited, section 274B of the INA prohibits citizenship discrimination in employment against citizens, asylees, refugees and LPRs. The conference report that accompanied the Refugee Act of 1980 provides another source of support.

So I would go ahead and apply for that job.

Hi Gilbert,

Thank you for your reply.

As an asylee, the fact of ten-year long way toward LPRs sometimes really drives me to despair. We are walking in the dark and only the glimmer from the other end of this tunnel console our hearts.

Hope all asylees on this forum will be able to take care of their
lives, their families and everything on the journey.

God bless you!

Robin

adjustment

I do not believe that people will actually have to wait ten years for their green cards. I do believe that within the next year or so Congress will act to remedy this problem. They did it in 1990 when the problem was far less serious.

i totally agree with my upstair's opinion!!
the congress is supposed to deal with that problem eventually
the ceiling for asylees' adjustment is absolutely unfair!!!

Congress solution

Hope that you're right. But honesty I don't think that something like that is going to happen. They are part of an anti-immigration policy.
A long wait is in front of us, and is better to be prepared, instead of having false expectations.
Once again. I hope tha you're right!!!
